This Volume 3 of 8 of American English 1781 to 1921 series, looking at words and their uses past and present and focusing on the English Language. It looks at selected papers on American English. Words and their uses is based on a series of articles published in The Galaxy from 1867 to 1869. These articles were then published in a book that went through thirty-here editions by 1899, as listed in the National Union Catalogue. Thus, making it of sociolinguistic importance and about the development of American English in the nineteenth century as well as the history of World Englishes in general. The work is that of commentor on English language and therefore its point of view if firmly set in New York City in the 1860's. Richard Grant White had a reputation of being a snob and unmistakably proud of his Anglo-American puritan ancestry. This text will appeal to today's sociolinguists for its view of social history in the city of New York and the significance of this grammatical commentary.
