The Western Sojourner *The Muleteers* As the transcription process proceeded, the author, with keen interest, began reading the ongoing parts of a serial written by Matthew for the newspaper entitled, The Nevada Muleskinner Gang the Muleteers. With growing excitement, he knew that he had, in mother lode vernacular, struck gold. When all of the parts had been transcribed, he approached the editor, who agreed to publish the complete Muleskinner series, one part in each Saturday newspaper edition. A repeat of the series was probable, depending upon how well the serial was met by the newspaper's readership. In fact, within weeks after the first part was published, the newspaper was approached by other mother lode papers, and then by newspapers all over the west, for permission to pick up and publish the serial. In the weekly Muleteer edition that started the rerun of the serial, the editor wrote a short introduction to the serial which stated, inter alia, that it was unknown by the Johnsonville Historical Society, or otherwise, which events contained in the serial were facts, and which were fiction. He requested that anyone having further information on events described to contact him at the newspaper.
