Jordana Frankel’s thrilling and imaginative YA dystopian novel The Ward is set in a near-future New York City. A catastrophic flood has washed out Manhattan, leaving the rivers polluted, and entire neighborhoods underwater. Some areas are quarantined because of an outbreak of a deadly disease. The illness, known as the Blight, is killing sixteen-year-old Ren’s sister. Desperate to save her sister’s life, Ren agrees to lead a secret mission from the government to search for a cure. But her quest leads to a confounding mystery beneath the water and an unlikely friendship with a passionate scientist. Readers who love speculative fiction and crave action-packed stories similar to Veronica Roth’s Divergent will find The Ward absolutely unputdownable. In this flooded city, one girl’s secret immunity is her sister’s only hope. A Dystopian New York: Explore a flooded Manhattan where entire neighborhoods are underwater and society is walled off into the desperate Ward and the privileged West Isle. High-Stakes Rooftop Racing: Go underground with the Ward’s thrilling and illegal roofraces—a dangerous world where speed is survival and Ren is a legend. Sisterhood and Sacrifice: With her sister Aven’s life on the line from a deadly pandemic, Ren will risk everything on a secret government mission to find a cure. A Dangerous Secret: Ren is immune to the Blight, a fact she must hide from everyone—especially the government that wants to turn her into an experiment.
