In the world of Domhan, the tree of life, thought to be a philosophical concept, has been discovered. It is the object that allows life to exist in all of its forms. A mysterious force moves to capture it and destroy the life giving tree to create an oblivion unknown to the world. Allyse, a young, highborn lady, will be flung from her life of protected luxury to see the ugly reality of a world dominated by lethal men. It will force her to discard her dresses and makeup for armor and weapons. Dorian, a young legionnaire, will see tragedy after tragedy, culminating in a mistake that sends him into exile and the monstrous prison of Auld Salem, where prisoners are fought to the death. The prison ignites a spark within him to seek redemption for his past mistakes. Through murder, brutality, deceit, and pain, Dorian and Allyse embark on a journey to see the salvation or destruction of the tree of life. They will learn the harsh realities of a world that functions off of needs, not desires.
