They needed to say What they believed about the origin of the world differently, because they were thinking differently about the world.Perhaps we can understand the situation best, if we think of how a man would write about the World at the time when it was still believed that the sun and moon went round the earth, and of how another would write after it had become impossible to believe that. To the one man this earth was the centre of the universe the sun and moon circled round it to serve its ends. The sun literally rose in the morning and set at night. It rose, too, to bring light for man's work, and it set to bring darkness for his sleep. It changed in its course to cause spring for his sowing, and autumn for his harvest. To the other the earth is a mere planet in a solar system, which belongs to the sun instead of having the sun for its servant, and the sun with its attendant earth is a mere point in a vaster system.
