Settled in the early 1700s and located on Old York Road, Hatboro was an early center of commerce and travel. Later, with the development of the trolley and Willow Grove Park, the town of Willow Grove became an important center for business. Mills along the Pennypack Creek contributed to the early settlement of the communities throughout the area, especially in Lower Moreland. Finally, the railway brought not only regional development but also members of the Swedenborgian community who established their religious center in Bryn Athyn.
