Paul de Maneville has spent his life being ruined and humiliated by his unfaithful wife and her mother. Finally, he rejects his responsibilities and sets sail for the Indies, hoping to start a new life. Too late, he opens a letter written with the intent of keeping him in Paris. Many consider this story to be based on the life of Balzac's brother.
