Heretics by this action leave the Catholic Church and any position of authority they may have in the Church. Thus a priest is no longer a pastor in the Church, a Bishop no longer is a Bishop in the Church and the Pope resigns his office as Pope, for how can a man remain head of the Church, who is not a member?
