He insinuated that the foul charge made against me (and Which at the time of publishing the libel had not even been investigated before the magistrate) was probably true, thereby endeavouring to incite against me such prejudice in the public mind as to render it impos~ sible to impannel a jury which might not have been biassed by his words. I have twice denied upon oath that there was a shadow of foundation for such a charge. No attempt was made by the defendant to justify this insinuation, to question the justice of my prompt acquittal, or to rehabilitate the charge in any form.
