Is it possible to be a good person and yet still be connected to great evil? On the day that his twin sons Jarrod and Joshua are born, Alexander Sinclair, an ambitious botanist, travels to a beef-cloning facility in Santa Fe, New Mexico to meet its visionary, enigmatic aging founder, Karl Helmick. Over the next twenty-one years, Alexander and Karl collaborate on incredible scientific breakthroughs which make both men wealthy beyond their wildest dreams as Karl becomes friend, mentor and father-figure to Alexander while Karl's cruel, sadistic son, Josef, clashes repeatedly with Jarrod and Joshua.
