Prince Virgil, son of the ruling king of Fairendale, carries a dark secret--a secret that could very well mean the loss of his claim to the throne. He has told no one, and no one must know.
But a prophetess shows up at the castle with the news that there is another boy, born in the village, who carries the gift of magic--the single most important requirement for ruling the kingdom of Fairendale--the king orders his soldiers to round up all the Fairendale children, those who have the gift of magic and those who do not, and throw them in the castle dungeons until the magical boy is found and the throne can be secured.
Led by Maude and Arthur, the village magic instructor, the children of Fairendale flee for their lives, away from the only home they have ever known. But the king's search quickly becomes a dangerous obsession that will lead the children of Fairendale through an underground portal, the arid dragon lands of Morad, and the treacherous terrain of the Weeping Woods. It will demand the lives of many, including, perhaps, the king's own son.
