In The Jungle, Sinclair’s descriptions of conditions in the U.S. meat packing industry were so vivid and breathtaking that they caused a public furor that resulted in the 1906 Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act. Time magazine would later note he was "a man with every gift except humor and silence."Given Sinclair’s stature, it was fitting that he would be the editor of The Cry for Justice, which he compiled and edited in the years after writing The Jungle. The book included a written introduction by Jack London, who would die an untimely death the year after it was published.
