I wrote The Complete Guide to High-End Audio in response to the hundreds of questions I received from Stereophile readers over the years (I was Technical Editor of Stereophile for eight years; I am now Technical Editor of Fi The Magazine of Music and Sound). I realized there was no book that guided the audio shopper through choosing equipment, setting up that equipment for the best performance, and to explain audio technology in simple and direct language. My goal with The Complete Guide to High-End Audio is to help anyone who enjoys music to get the best sound for their money. I'd like to address the comments of the anonomous critic who didn't like the book. There's a fringe group in audio who mirrors the belief of certain "consumer" magazines. That is, they believe such myths as "all CD players sound the same", and "buy the amplifier with the most watts per dollar." Such individuals resent magazines and books that tell it like it is—-that all equipment doesn't sound the same, and that high-quality music reproduction in the home isn't a waste of time and money. Moreover, the critic claims the book contains technical errors, yet doesn't give any examples. It's also interesting that he didn't provide his identity.
