France 1908. As every year Count Horace de Dragoncourt and his wife and children leave Paris to spend the summer months at Château Drakòn in the Departement of Roye. The four siblings, Miss Elle in particular, run wild and give free rein to their boredom in the countryside. Until the socially-awkward but beautiful Swedish orphan Agnes Gunarsson, step-daughter of Baron Maxilimian Dupuis de Melancourt, pays them a visit and both Elle and her twin-brother Jacques fall head over heels for the ethereal, bookish nymph, with disastrous consequences. France 1917. The First World War is raging over the north of France and Château Drakòn has been turned into a provisional hospital.
