The Beth Book By Sarah Grand "How is it people never expect a girl to do anything?" young Beth Caldwell asks. How, indeed? Beth's mother is not quite sure what to do with her little genius when Beth spurns her mother's ideals of self-sacrifice and an early marriage, preferring to study piano and all of those around her. Beth eventually marries the local doctor, thinking it might give her independence. But he oversees the Lock Hospital which imprisons prostitutes with venereal diseases. The locals believe Beth is complicit in her husband's acts and snub her, until Beth develops her literary abilities and her own voice.
