"The Becoming" is the story of a southern belle revolutionary, exploring her way through womanhood."The Becoming"emphasises the unique experiences of black women & our relationship with God.Inspired by "Their Eyes Are Watching God" by Zora Neale Hurston, I wanted to write out my conversations with myself and God. Bringing in a completely new level of authenticity to my work that I plan to continue practising. The birth of this book began at the Goldsboro Museum in Sanford, Florida, when I was 18, volunteering with the iconic Mama Francis Oliver. I encountered Zora & all of the Harlem Renaissance in a place where my heart was so familiar, I swore we had met in a life before. She encouraged me to give more of myself to my poems. I have been writing poetry since 3rd grade in Miss Triplett's class, and while everyone else was struggling with 5-paragraph essays, I wanted to deconstruct the complexities of Langston Hughes. This became an oppression in high school, where I immersed myself in Dr. Angelou's story, charismatically living through all her adventures. Yet it wasn't until I met Zora that I truly thought of myself as a poet/ writer. It took 10 years of life experiences to finally have the artillery and focus to organise a project I could be proud of. These are pieces of my soul, my triumphs and some of my failures. I pray you find the light and love in it. I hope it encourages you on the journey to yourself.
