Robert Spencer Pierpont IV's birth to privilege did not provide immunity from the ravages of alcoholism and addiction. Spencer, as his family called him, succumbed to the disease early in life and struggled several times to achieve recovery. He experienced unspeakable tragedy followed by great financial success, a marriage to a beautiful woman and four children but ultimately gave it all away for one more drink, one more hour of isolation, and more unintended behavior and consequences until he was ready and willing to surrender. In Sunday Morning Mountain, Peter M. Pettingill tells the story of a man who struggled with alcoholism, selfishness, self-centeredness, fear, discontentment and narcissism until a pivotal moment on a great lawn overlooking the Long Island Sound where one choice would result in more years of misery and another choice would provide results he never imagined.
