The least populated of New York City's boroughs, the Island continues to be recognized for independence of spirit and preservation of community and historic treasures. Known as the "Borough of Parks", its support of green space, the arts, and cultural institutions gives Staten Island a sense of community and a way of life that continues to attract newcomers. Located within a short ferry ride to Manhattan, the Island has elements, such as the Travis Fourth of July Parade and the Richmond County Fair, that are more typical of Middle America than a metropolitan suburb.
