Typical of the many mod brass albums of the day,
Sound of the Times
features many of the same people, tunes, ideas, sounds, and arrangements as other albums.
"I'm Coming Home Cindy"
is a great one arranged by
Dick Behrke
of
King Richard
's
Fluegel Knights
fame.
"A Sign of the Times"
is one of several
Bobby Scott
arrangements generally leaning more toward the subtler
Mancini
sound than "brass impact." But
"Batman Theme"
is all bombast, and at under a minute and a half (still too long for this one, some might say) it should be. With a huge, thunderous beat and brass spreading everywhere like batwings, this creative arrangement flies right past the discotheque and "heavy" listening.
"Why Not?"
ends the other side with some jangly, sitar-esque guitar, as if someone felt it important to acknowledge
Gabor Szabo
or at least psychedelia. The
Elgart
's final "au go-go" effort tries new things and has its moments. ~ Tony Wilds
