This novel begins with the conclusion of the Civil War and ends with the days following the First World War. It tells of the lives of three brave and honorable men of the 10th Cavalry known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Larry Davis, Rodney Dawson, and Curtiss Jones are former slaves who found meaning for their lives in the service to their country with the cavalry. The stories of Davis, Jones, and Dawson intertwine with fighting the Apaches, soldiering with Theodore Roosevelt and his Rough Riders during the Cuban campaign.
