If you would see things as they are-in stark reality, in bare truth-you will find in these poems of Sandburg a fulfillment of your desire. No Illusive visions of loveliness confront the reader, only fact after fact set down in such convincing and definite fashion that even the heedless must feel the truth. If there were no other poem in the volume "And So Today" dealing with the unknown soldier would be sufficient excuse for its publication. But there are also "The Windy City" and "Slabs of the Sunburnt West" which make an altogether solid background for the shorter and less striking selections. The whole effect is one of grandeur, of motion and of ruggedness so typical of the west that it can easily be considered as the logical outcome of the author's recent trip to California away from the plains of Illinois.
