"Shambles" is the story of Marianne Fischer, a young girl growing up in 1930's in the ethnic German region of Western Czechoslovakia, the "Sudetenland". She tells of her struggles and capture under a Fascist takeover, her internment in a Russian labor camp, her escape to Switzerland, and her eventual emigration to America. Her story is engrossing, harrowing, chilling and poignant, but always told with humor and optimism. It is about the will to survive-"Durchhalten!"--Hold on! Against all odds. This fascinating memoir should be read and remembered by future generations, who will grow up in a world that has all but forgotten personal struggles such as Manya's, who overcame unthinkable circumstances and lived to tell about it.
