The poems in Searching For Good all circle, at various distances, the idea of the foundational importance of family and faith. Many of the poems expressly acknowledge the ongoing authoritative role of the Bible. The familiar topics visited include ageing, societal change, the deadly sins, values, work stress, ecological threats, beliefs, God’s judgment, and God’s mercy. Although more about ideas than landscapes, the commonplace settings and Canadiana that are in the background – snow covered locales, a sports field, the river’s edge, a local drugstore, an empty street, a church pew, etc. – are integral to the book’s tone.
