Enter the World of Beautiful Cowichan Sweaters
Carrying on a tradition born in the 1800s, today's Cowichan knitters of Vancouver, British Columbia, produce unique designs often derived from personal and tribal stories, incorporating geometric patterns and a central figure such as a whale, eagle, or bear. They are produced in the round (that is, without seams) from homespun wool that is not dyed, showing only natural colors such as white, brown, and grey, and are naturally water- and stain-resistant.
As the popularity of these sweaters grew in the twentieth century, this native craft was threatened by a flood of imitations; however today they are recognized as trademarked "Genuine Cowichan."
Cowichan Indian Sweaters
celebrates the goal of preserving the spirit of these wonderful sweaters by documenting their history, techniques, and designs. In this book you will find:
-Charts for 165 traditional designs.
-72 black-and-white photos.
-80 line drawings.
-Schematic patterns for basic pullover and cardigan styles.
-Traditional shaping treatments for pockets, armholes, necks, collars, and sleeves.
-Traditional joining treatments for shoulders and sleeves.
-Spinning information.
-Profiles of three women involved in the preservation of the craft.
Discover the rich history of Cowichan sweaters and deepen your appreciation for this beautiful Indigenous craft.
