English summary: This anthology is the second volume in a series that looks at Romanticism's capacity for political reform. After an initial summary of the relationship between "Romanticism and Revolution" this volume focuses on the degree of liberalism within Romanticism. In doing so it places the political implications of Romanticism at its core, thereby enabling the popular image of a rather conservative and backward-looking movement to be critically challenged. The thoughts and deeds of the Romantics took place in a society that was in turmoil, and the movement looked to influence this upheaval - partly by means of a conservative defense against the French Revolution, and partly through the liberal pursuit of modernity. The book also emphasizes a second aspect that has so far been neglected in history and social science. It broadly examines German and European Romanticism ranging from the structural analysis of Romanticism to the critical evaluation of key intellectual and political figures as well as the movement's subsequent reception.
