Arthur, appointed him a member of the Tariff Commission and afterward he worked in the U. S. Department of Justice until his death. — He lived in Shepherdstown, Virginia (now West Virginia)—a short distance from Harper's Ferry—at the time of the John Brown Raid and relates the facts as a reliable eye-witness to the events which took place on those days in mid October, 1859. He also records the essence of a personal interview with Brown shortly after his arrest and incarceration.
