Portsmouth, England. Early noughties. Rogue newspaper reporter Llew Sabler has grown up, found love and is bumping along as a investigative journalist with a regional daily newspaper. Then he's asked by his editor to probe the paper's dodgy main advertiser, egomaniac pet-food magnate Gert Valge. When Llew learns Valge is running a live-animals trafficking racket, he sets in motion a chain of events that leaves two colleagues fighting for their lives, and sees Llew sacked - again. Cunning Valge, meanwhile, defies all efforts by both the paper and the police to bring him down. In further bitter blows, Llew's scarily smart girlfriend Astrid dumps him, and the health of his long-time friend and colleague, Thirza Kirkby, takes a turn for the worse. With his life unravelling, a desperate, desolate Llew is left clinging on, before events - both shocking and heart-warming - restore his faith in love ... and justice.
