In Book Two of the Ordinary Man Series, Andrew returns home to Olivia from Afghanistan, injured from a bombing in Kabul in which several colleagues were killed. He finds Olivia hospitalized in the intensive care unit on a ventilator, close to death from sepsis. While Olivia recovers, Andrew faces his demons from the bombing and ongoing PTSD which he cannot overcome without help. As Andrew plods through his recovery, the military is planning for another deployment in South Asia, where he must examine oil contracts between the United States and Pakistan. As Andrew returns from Pakistan, he simultaneously gets caught in the crossfire of Steve Walker's vendetta against Olivia, culminating in his detainment by the Washington DC Metro Police Department. Olivia gets a new security agent, Ichiro Adachi. Agent Adachi presents several worrisome problems for Andrew as he prepares to leave Olivia for his new assignment. Distressed the overseas assignment will push them further apart, Andrew and Olivia marry against the wishes of Andrew's mother and Olivia's brother.
