Cadmus Marcellus Wilcox (May 20, 1824 – December 2, 1890) was a career United States Army officer who served in the Mexican–American War and also was a Confederate general during the Civil War.Wilcox joined Joseph E. Johnston's Army of the Shenandoah with his regiment on July 16, 1861 and marched to Manassas to reinforce Brig. Gen. P.G.T. Beauregard's Army of the Potomac just before the First Battle of Bull Run on July 21. Months later he was promoted to Brigadier General and commanded a brigade in General James Longstreet’s Corps before eventually leading a division. As a Brigadier General, Wilcox had to write official accounts of his campaigns, and they were preserved in The War of the Rebellion: Official Records of the Union and Confederate Armies. Since Stuart died in 1864 at the Battle of Yellow Tavern, his only primary accounts of the war come from his commands and postwar reports, preserved in the Official Records. Wilcox wrote an official report on the Battle of Second Manassas or Second Bull Run, a decisive Confederate victory at the end of August 1862 that paved the way for Lee’s invasion of Maryland the following month. This edition of Wilcox’s official account includes illustrations and maps of the campaign, as well as pictures of the important commanders of the battle.
