The coin was designed by Charles E. Barber the chief engraver of the mint. It is composed of 90% silver. Minted at the New Orleans Mint which operated from 1838 to 1909 with interruptions during the Civil War. The New Orleans Mint has a deep and varied history, it was closed during the Civil War and during Reconstruction. It is housed in a protective sealed acrylic case.
