I wrote about my experience as a Battalion Surgeon with the Marines in Viet Nam 1967-68. I was 26 years old and my training as an MD was a 1-year surgical internship at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx. By June, 1967 the war had escalated and the US would be sending as many as 500,000 men to Viet Nam. There was a desperate need for MD's and so I was drafted instead of being given a deferment for a Residency in Neurosurgery. I finished the Internship, returned to Akron, gave away my car and clothes and told my Dad that I had joined the Navy and would be on sea duty. In truth I was headed to Camp Pendleton for duty with the Marines. My War is the story of that tour of combat duty and the experiences I endured. Nearly 20 years later from memory I wrote and dictated those events for my children and grandchildren to understand the experiences I hoped they would never have to go through. Now as I approach 85 years old, my son had the papers converted to a book and ensured that my hoped-for legacy would be a reality. His gift to his children and our other grandchildren will secure my desires. It was my story, now it's theirs.
