The dollar’s reverse depicts a majestic eagle landing on the moon with the earth in the background. This design was minted from 1971 to 1978 with the exception of the Bicentennial Years. Changes to the Eisenhower dollar were recommended for the observation of the nation’s Bicentennial in 1976. Through a nationwide competition, a design by Dennis R. Williams was selected which depicted the Liberty Bell superimposed on the moon. Minted for only two years, 1975 through 1976, this dual-dated Bicentennial coin symbolizes the first two centuries of America’s history. The coins are layered in 24-Karat Pure Gold, then colorized through a proprietary process to commemorate man’s first landing on the moon.
