Pulse examination is one of the four examinations that East Asian Medicine professionals use to assess their patients' state of health. Reading and interpreting the pulse takes many years of careful study and seen by many as the pinnacle of assessment skill. The Methods of Pulse Differentiation and Assessment or Biàn Mài Píng Mài Fǎ (辨脉平脉法), translated here by Tzu-Ying Chiang and edited by Stephen Bonzak, is a Western Han Dynasty pulse examination text used by one of the most famous practitioners in East Asian Medical history, Zhāng Zhòngjǐng (张仲景), as a preface to his work on herbal medicine known as the Treatise on Cold Damage and Miscellaneous and Complex Diseases or the Shānghán Zábìng Lùn (伤寒杂病论).
