Benjamin Kalico, a young man who has opened a detective agency in Austin, Texas, forms an unlikely partnership with Emelia Winterjoy, a retired English teacher and amateur sleuth, to solve a murder "that hasn't happened yet." Lured by a generous retainer and Emelia's attractive niece, Kalico humors his elderly client at first. But while investigating a series of accidents, he begins to wonder: could these incidents have been planned? Between chasing escaped terriers and scaling trees after geriatric cats, Kalico gradually becomes convinced that Miss Winterjoy is not fanciful and grows to trust and respect her. When a member of her book circle dies, the unlikely pair unravel a sinister plot, involving jealousy and revenge.
