All of Kappy Kirk's life was spent on the island where she lived making her a unique individual given the mobility of the age we live in.
She combined the history of the three communities: Goodland, Marco and Caxambas in her own person.
The places she called home were the historic buildings of the island: the Marco Lodge in Old Marco (now in Goodland), the Heights Hotel, the Barfield House, both in Caxambas, and her own home in Goodland going on 100 years-old, give or take a few years. Some of the homes are still here and some have already passed into legend.
Kappy's story is a tapestry whose threads are the many people of Goodland, Marco, and Caxambas, past and present, woven through and intertwining.
In June of 1993, unaware of the singular thread that drew me to her and would lead me into writing and publishing historical books about Aunt Tommie and island history, I went to Goodland to meet her.
