Costa Rica, diciembre de 1883. Costa Rica, December 1883.  Aitana Ugarte, a young woman from the Basque city of Bilbao, travels to Puerto Limón for an arranged marriage.  Her fiancé is a 60-year-old plantation owner in the rich coffee-growing region of Tierras Altas de Turrialba, on the slopes of a legendary volcano around which swirls a mysterious legend.  When she arrives at the hacienda, however, the fields are in ruins, her husband-to-be has died, and his alcoholic son has gambled away nearly all his inheritance.  Aitana faces a seemingly never-ending series of obstacles to hold on to the estate, make a new life in a foreign country and forging her own destiny.
