In first-century Samaria, a woman's identity is defined by the man who rules over her-first a father, then a husband, and eventually a son. To be without a man is to be without covering, without protection, without a name. Alone, she is nothing.
When the Samaritan woman, Adva, grieves for her first husband, the Law of Moses requires that she immediately be redeemed by another male in her late husband's family. While still grieving the loss of one man, she is bound to others who curse her, abuse her, or discard her like property. Each husband believes she is a treasure to possess, but many want her to satisfy their needs and to birth a son, an heir, by any means possible.
By the time Adva returns home to Sychar, she has endured many unmentionable things. Now that she is home, she hopes to rebuild her life with her son. However, her past comes to haunt her where she least expects it.
It looks like everything she hoped for will be lost, and her life may be taken from her. Then she meets a man at the well.
