Excerpt from Judith Studies in Metre, Language and Style: With a View to Determining the Date of the Oldenglish Fragment and the Home of Its Author
Scanty as the remains of Old English poetry are yet scantier still is the information concerning them that con temporary and immediately following ages have left us. Of the authors, their lives and works, as well as of the exact times in which they worked and flourished, we know next to nothing. With two or three names of poets and some few notions of the subjects of their singing, historians of the literature of the Old English period have had to conjure. These generalities can have no better illustration than is afforded by the critical history of the epic fragment 'judith'. To deal carefully with the various questions that arise from a study of this fragment is the object of the pages that follow; it will be best introduced by a review of the most important contributions to the subject by previous scholars and critics.
