This script traces the relationship of the landed Charles Jennens and composer G. F. Handel. When Charles' brother Robert signals trouble with his Balliol, Oxford, College roommate about Christian faith, Charles begins to assemble a demonstration of the unity of the Bible, in libretto form. In fact, he is on his way there, his own alma mater, when he is intercepted by terrible news, and must make a lonely journey to the campus about his brother's death. Charles is very active in social reform and Christian mission, and a circuit begins around a large circle, including his home for rehabilitating women, which will bring him face-to-face with the roommate who pushed Robert--and began a career managing London's 'ladies of the night.' The libretto will eventually reach Handel, but not before it has attempted to intervene in the life of a lost soul. This is a highly historical retelling of the highs and lows involved, material that is preserved for us by Ruth Smith's pictoral biography. Unfortunately no images of the 'melodium' of the early pages of the script survive.
