As a Weapons Master, Eli has the ability to summon any weapon that he has ever touched at will, and master it within the first few minutes of its summoning. Now old enough to join the Academy, Eli and his best friend Jude, who is heir to the Combat Specialist bloodline, believe that their dreams of becoming an Operative in Kismet's armed forces may finally be coming true. However after a brief time at the Academy, Eli discovers that Kismet's ruler is hosting the Trials of Magic, Might and Lineage-an ancient tradition that pits heirs of all three bloodlines in three rounds of sudden death. But when a powerful and faceless enemy rises out of the shadows of vengeance and treachery, Eli begins to believe that there may be more to his bloodline than he is aware of.
