The Hopper is named after Grace Hopper for her work with the United States Navy Reserve where she developed a new computer language. After graduating from Vassar with a bachelor’s degree in mathematics and physics, she joined the United States Navy Reserve and landed a role on the Bureau of Ships Computation Project. In that role, she suggested the use of a new programming language using English in place of symbols which was the beginning of the computer language “COBOL." She also coined the term “debugging” in reference to fixing an issue within a computer when she found an actual moth within the system.
