The purpose of this project is to review, analyze, and compare the military strategies of General Ulysses S . Grant and General William T. Sherman in the context of the ACSC StrategyProcess Model to provide insight into the evolution of strategyand the actual process by which it is derived . This will be accomplished by describing the actions of General Grant and General Sherman principally during significant battles of the American Civil War in the western theater. In a brief backgroundsketch of each general, there will be emphasis on early events that might have influenced strategy development. The final chapter will compare and contrast individual strategies in terms of the ACSC Strategy Process Model and will analyze the way in which General Sherman's strategy complemented that of General Grant to provide the ultimate strategy for winning the war. To this end, some of the parallel events of their lives and careers, and the impact of the close personal and professional relationship that developed during the Civil War will be examined.
