Two families from Fredericksburg and Caroline County in Virginia watch their sons march off to war in 1861. Little do the loved ones know that they will have to struggle to just stay alive as they watch their beloved state trampled under the feet of marching and fighting armies. Some family members must flee their home before they are overrun by the advancing armies. As the men of the struggle to stay alive in three states, they worry about their loved ones. Are they safe and do they have a place to go home to? Can they put their shattered lives back together again and heal?
