Harold Simpkin truly embodies the spirit of the GreatestGeneration. Born in England, he immigrated to the United States as a child and first enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1924. In 1942, during fierce combat in the Philippines, he earned the Silver Star for gallantry. Later that year, he was captured by Japanese forces and endured over three years in brutal captivity. Despite the unimaginable trauma he suffered, Harold chose to continue serving his country. He reenlisted-this time in the U.S. Air Force-and ultimately dedicated more than 24 years of his life to active-duty military service. He bore the wounds of war, both visible and invisible, with quiet strength and dignity. My hope is that this book offers a window into the life of a remarkable man and patriot-one whose sacrifice and service deserve to be remembered.
