This volume presents an interdisciplinary study of the large—scale excavations conducted by the Austrian Archaeological Institute from 1997 to 1999 in Mautern (Lower Austria), a vicus of the Roman Favianis. Evaluation of the archaeological evidence has given us the first clear picture of the sequence of building and the material culture of a vicus in Noricum, from the early stages of the establishment of a fort to its function during the late antique period. Within the framework of the entire excavation, also through data based on contributions drawn from related disciplines such as epigraphy, archaeo—botany and archaeo—zoology, a broad picture may be made of the socio—cultural and economic patterns of the inhabitants of the vicus of Mautern, which were constantly being modified due to migration as well as the changing basic conditions through three centuries.
