منذ انهيار السرديّة الشيوعيّة، حلّتْ الهويّة محلّ الطبقة، والثقافة محلّ الاقتصاد. وعرف العالم طلبًا هويّاتيًّا يُلبّي الرغبة في الاعتراف. لكنّ هذا الطلب ما لبث أن عرف زَيْغًا اختلفت أشكاله، أفضى في الغالب إلى إضعاف سبيكة المجتمعات، وتهديد العيش المشترك، وخلخلة الدولة. ما كان يُراد أن يكون حلًّا، أضحى مُشكِلًا. كيف التوفيق بين الطلب الهويّاتيّ، ومقتضى المواطَنة؟ كيف التأليف ما بين الخصوصيّة والعالميّة؟ وكيف يمكن تحقيق توزيعٍ عادل للرموز، دون الازدراء بأيّ مكوّنٍ من مكوّنات المجتمع؟ تطفح المجتمعات الغربيّة باحتدام خطابات الهويّة، بين الأصليّين والوافدين من مهاجرين مسلمين. ويغدو مشكل الهويّة الجانب المرئيَّ لمشاكل معقّدة، تُخفي أكثر ممّا تُبدي. هذا الكتاب محاولةٌ لفهم خطاب الهويّة، مشروعيّته وزَيْغه، والفخّ الذي يَؤول إليه، في الغرب والعالم العربيّ، على السواء. هو سَبحٌ في قضايا ذات بعدٍ كونيّ، كالإسلاموفوبيا، عودة العرقيّة في العالم، المجتمع الأرخبيلي، الاستبدال الكبير، وخطاب نقض الاستعمار. وقبل كلّ هذا، العدوّ الحميم، وكبش الفداء الضروريّ. عسى أن تُسعف قراءته في الإحاطة بأسئلةٍ حارقة تتوزّع العالم. Since the collapse of communist narratives, identity has replaced class, and culture has taken the place of economy. The world has witnessed a rise in identity-based demands seeking recognition. However, while these demands have taken various forms, they have mostly led to societal fragmentation, threats to coexistence, and the destabilization of the state. What was meant to be a solution has instead become a problem. How can identity-based demands be reconciled with the requirements of citizenship? How can we balance particularism and universalism? How can we ensure fair distribution of symbols without disregarding any component of society? Western societies are experiencing an intensification of identity-based discourses between natives and immigrants, especially Muslim migrants. The issue of identity has become the visible aspect of deeper and more complex problems.
