In 1930s South Mississippi, Ada, a 38-year-old garden center worker, is alone for the first time in as many years. Her ex-husband, the Reverend Lonnie Boykin, has left her to raise their nine children alone. She meets John, a farmer, and reluctantly falls in love with him. He wants to marry her, but at their wedding, Lonnie tells everyone that she's still married to him and that he faked their divorce. She faces a choice between staying with John and keeping her children.
Ada has friends who support her through her pain and bring her through to the other side. She shuts off her emotions until she learns John is planning to marry another. She knows he loves her, and, with her friend's help, she gets him to return home. They start a secret relationship which creates danger. She faces losing her children, her home, her church; and the greater danger from the culture in which they live. The relationship puts her in a dark place.
