On May 25, 2020, George Floyd, a 46-year-old African American man was killed during an arrest after a store clerk alleged, he had passed a counterfeit $20 bill in Minneapolis. A white police officer knelt on Mr. Floyd's neck for a period of 8 minutes and 45 seconds and it ended his life. When this tragic event took place, Faith was only a six-year-old, first grade student who enjoyed watching YouTube videos like any normal kid would until the graphic scene of Mr. Floyd's death came across her screen. As any curious kid would, she continued to watch it until her emotions got the best of her. As a parent, I tried to keep her from seeing and hearing about this attempting to protect her by limiting television time as well as adult conversations with her father. Obviously, that didn't work. I noticed my child who was sitting next to me with her headphones in her ear upset and tears uncontrollably, rolling down her tiny face. I grabbed her iPad and asked her what was wrong. She began questioning why did the cop have to kill George and that she thought cops were supposed to help people and not hurt them. This was the day Faith's dad and I had to have a tough conversation with our child about being black in America, more specifically, a black male. Faith, an avid reader and writer full of ideas, immediately wanted to write a book about justice. As a result, Faith Fights for Justice, was birthed. This book is inspired by the racial injustices, especially of black boys and men in America. In the book, Faith's classmate, Jamal, an African-American boy was accused of taking something of value that belonged to a Caucasian little girl. As class President, Faith stood tall and proud in front of her peers and presented a case for Jamal. Read the book to find out what happens!
