This book describes a completely novel class of techniques for designing ultralow-power integrated circuits (ICs). In many applications such as battery operated implanted systems and battery-less (energy-scavenging) systems where relatively low operating frequencies are targeted, the overall power/energy dissipation is emerging as the key design criterion. As a result, there is a growing demand for reducing the power (energy) consumption in ICs to extremely low levels, not achievable by using classical "subthreshold CMOS" techniques due to leakage currents, parameter variations, and reducing noise margins. This book introduces a new family of "subthreshold source-coupled circuits" which can be used for implementing digital (logic) gates that dissipate well below 1fJ per switching event, yet maintain the noise margins that are necessary for robust operation. This book also explains how the techniques used for implementing ultra low-power digital circuits could be extended for implementing high performance analog/mixed-signal circuits such as continuous-time filters, analog-to-digital data converters, and phase-locked loops.Introduces a completely new approach for implementing ultra-low-power integrated circuits, based on a new family of logic circuit called "subthresh-old source-couples logic";Explains in detail how the introduced techniques can be used for both digital and analog, ultra low-power design;Includes experimental results from nine different text chips, demonstrating effectiveness of techniques introduced;Provides practical design examples of circuits and system manufactured using techniques introduced;Introduces as analytical approach for simplifying the understanding, design and comparison of the proposed design techniques with conventional approaches.
