Los personajes de los cuentos de El naranjo arriesgan la vida y sufren injusticias sin llegar a satisfacer sus ambiciones: un marinero portugués que lanza una botella al mar, un soldado español que vive entre indios y sirve de intérprete a Cortés, un noble griego que pone sitio a Numancia, un hijo de Cortés implicado en una conspiración contra el rey y un actor de Hollywood que visita un prostíbulo en Acapulco. El autor muestra las miserias de la conquista de América, los horrores de las guerras en Europa y los exotismos del mundo contemporáneo a través de la fi gura emblemática del naranjo, símbolo del mestizaje.

Through the figure of the orange tree, emblematic symbol of the mestizaje, Fuentes creates a world of short stories that describe the miseries of the Spanish conquest of America, the horrors of the European wars and the exoticisms of the contemporary world. Its characters risk their lives, suffer injustices and live a life of unfulfilled ambitions – a Portuguese sailor throws a bottle to the sea, a Spanish soldier who lives amongst Indians acts as Cortés’ interpreter, Cortés’ son is implicated in a conspiracy against the king, a Hollywood actor visits an Acapulco brothel.
